What a fantastic park for families! We had such a great time here β€” the kids absolutely loved the swings, train ride, and boating area. There’s so much to do to keep little ones entertained, and the skate park adds a fun touch for older kids. The walking track is perfect for a peaceful stroll or a bit of exercise while the kids play. It’s clean, well-maintained, and offers something for everyone. Highly recommended for a fun and active day out with the family!

Tucked between Avalon’s quiet streets and the Hutt River, Motutawa Avalon Park is a beloved six-hectare retreat for families in the Lower Hutt community. Owned and managed by Hutt City Council, this park may not be a flashy tourist draw, but it’s a cherished local spot where parents and kids alike can unwind, play, and enjoy the outdoors. Designed with families in mind, the park’s crown jewel is the Motutawa Avalon Playgroundβ€”a modern, expansive space that opened in 2016. With climbing nets, slides, swings, and imaginative play structures, it’s no wonder this playground is a hit with children. Beyond the playground, the park offers a delightful mix of activities: paddle boats on the small lake, a mini train ride, a flying fox, and a lighthearted minigolf course. Teens gravitate toward the skate park, while tennis enthusiasts can use the public courts. On sunny days, families flock to picnic tables scattered across the grounds, turning the park into a hub of laughter and shared meals. Steeped in local history, Motutawa Avalon Park has evolved since its development began in 1962. The pavilion opened in 1967, and upgrades in the 1970sβ€”including lush plantings, a confidence course (1974), and the iconic lake and fort (1975–76)β€”solidified its role as a community gathering place. These historical touches add charm, blending nostalgia with the park’s contemporary vibe. Practical for pet owners, dogs are permitted only on-leash at the northern end past the treeline, ensuring a balance between recreation and relaxation for all visitors. While it’s not a destination for international travelers, Motutawa Avalon Park shines as a local treasure. It’s the kind of place where neighborhood kids grow up exploring, parents bond over coffee while watching their children play, and community spirit thrives. For Hutt City families, this park isn’t just a green spaceβ€”it’s a backdrop for countless memories.

A superb park, well laid out with great planning. The planting attracts birds of all types including the rowdy Tui. Great water features. Plenty of spacious parking and electric car charging posts. Toilets suffer from vandals but usable

Nice park with loads to do for the kids. Great swing park with water play area. When we went the mini golf was closed with no reasons given which was sad as we had travelled some distance to play. We did enjoy the boating pond, Colin the 6 tonne T-rex and the ride on train that travels thorough the park (only$2 a ticket was good value.)

A lovely park for the kids that’s often busy during the holidays, weekends or after school. Lots of cool stuff like the flying fox, climbing bars, tower slides, water features and other options for the juniors. There’s also the mini train ride during the weekends and school holidays and boat rides by the pond. A huge riding park has also been setup next to it for those with the love for speed. Heaps of parking and toilets available.

Nice place for kids to do biking and for adults to just rest and relax or read a book in the shade under a tree.

Great space for a family picnic and great time running around the playground for the children. One down side there's nowhere to buy drinks or snacks so you must bring your own. Food trucks are not always there.
