Building is getting dangerously hot in summer with inadequate ventilation and no AC in the rooms, just an ineffective desk fan which might be fine in winter. As climate heating increases I think the building is at risk of becoming untenable. Some passive cooling at the very least needs to be implemented. Sun shades from the high northerly sun, filter tints on widows, better heat blocking curtains etc. call an engineer for affordable solutions! Do not accept the default "no refund" policy if you need to book elsewhere to get away from the heat, document the conditions and escalate under the consumer guarantee act complaints if you need too. I got new money back. Free Wifi with good signal, quiet guests, friendly staff and cleanliness are all plus points, it's a shame the building cooling design has let it down. I think this review is fair and balanced. Good to stay here only if the weather is not consistently hot otherwise avoid.

If I could give 0 stars, I would. Started out as a good place to stay, but quickly deteriorated. When we first opened the door to our room, we were met with the temperature of the Sahara Desert. The room was stifling hot, and there was 0 zero airflow letting the heat out, and the fan supplied to the room was full of dust, and provided no relief. To make matters worse, we then found cockroaches in our room. Lots of them, crawling across the floor. We sprayed bug spray in the room, which make it stink and due to the lack of airflow in the room, it never really left. Worried there were more hiding, we checked the safes under the bed and we found cockroach eggs. Probably 30 minutes were spent clearing the room of the infestation, and even then, more were found later. Even after it couldnโ€™t get worse, it did. Dirty used tissues were in the room when we arrived, pillows were stained, and yet we were told we would be ok, THEN, we walk into the public shared bathroom, and were brutally greeted with blood on the floor, which grossed us out. Like myself, if you are above average height, you may have to relocate to the floor due to fact the bed is the length of a cockroach. That might explain why they are in our room. As there was nowhere to go from our bug infested room, we had to sleep in there. Lo and behold, the beds are rock solid and squeak like mice everytime you breathe. There was an upside though, although it does not make much of a difference to all the negative things, and that is the location. It is located right near the Viaduct Harbour, Commercial Bay and Queen Street. For all the poor people who have had the misfortune of booking the YMCA hostel located at 20 Pitt Street, please rethink this very vital part of your holiday. Kindest regards, Room 404

Really great for budget travellers especially the private rooms offer quiet and comfort. The team is great and they told me everything I needed to know. You are right in the Center and itโ€™s only a walking distance to the main attractions! Can highly recommend it to my fellow travellers !

Really great hostel โ€” what truly stands out is the excellent service and the incredibly kind staff. Great people all around. Everything was clean and well-kept. The only real issue I had was during very hot weather: thereโ€™s no AC, so my room became almost unbearable. Also, the shower head is a bit low, so if youโ€™re over 180 cm youโ€™ll have to duck slightly while showering. But those are minor inconveniences โ€” overall, a great hostel!

Value for money. Great service. Clean. The bed linen was already set in place (I didnโ€™t have to make my own bed). Safe. Attracts other travellers who are considerate of others. I walked from city centre to reach there so I enjoyed walking through nice residential area. The only reason I didnโ€™t give full rating for location is that I walked up the incline and couldnโ€™t find it at first in the dark. It is a nice stroll walking into town and an easy walk.

First things first: I stayed there for six months because of my studies in Auckland. It was just terrible I still have nightmares(4months later) almost every room got bedbugs and me too because they donโ€™t want to call a professional ,itโ€™s not really clean , itโ€™s noisy and the staff is really bad. Please donโ€™t stay there please itโ€™s not worth it!!!!!

We got this hostel really cheap via Agodas limited price thing and both wanted to stay at one of the โ€˜nicerโ€™ hostels on our backpacking trip. This hostel was great as our room only had 4 beds of which we were the only ones in the room anyway, and had several kitchens and toilets. Although there was only one eating area so we just ate in our room, the only thing I would improve is the fact that there are toilets on each floor but some are only male/female. Meaning if you want to go to the toilet late at night you might have to trek downstairs. Bit of an exaggeration but itโ€™s not on the same floor which is annoying. But the rest of the hostel was amazing!

If you book a single room online it is around 63 per night. The room had a bit of a smell and it was basic. For the price you are paying, it is good value for a single room. There are much worse budget accommodation in this part of Auckland.

The facilities here are a little basic but the hostel feels very spacious and clean. This was our first hostel since arriving in Auckland and everyone we've met here has been really nice to talk to. One of the receptionists is an absolute legend as he managed to break my lock with his bare hands after we stupidly locked the keys in our locker.

If you are looking for cheap accommodation that isn't dirty, this is the place to go. Im a real princess when it comes to accommodation. Unfortunately with hardly any notice of the event we needed to attend and no spare cash laying around, we had to stay in a hostel. I have to say this was one of the cleanest hostels I have ever stayed at. The location is great, everything you need is walking distance. Staff were all very friendly, including the housekeeping team. Toilets and showers are cleaned regularly. The only downfalls would be us having to go up 2 floors to use the bathroom and also the sound from the fire station (but we did expect noise as we are staying in central city). Would probably recommend hooks for towels are placed in rooms. Would stay again!
