On the plate at El Mexicano Zapata Cantina, the idea is Mex-style and well executed. Grill work shows a clean sear and rested meats. Thereβs always a considered veg choice. A sensible spend for the quality. Good value shows in the serve sizes.
Had dinner here the other night, food was absolutely delicious! Highly recommend the fajitas or the chimichanga with chicken, but be prepared that the portions are huge! We ordered the Corona Mojito which was super refreshing and also quite strong in alcohol. Absolutely 5/5 stars for this experience, would come here again!
We visited El Mexicano Zapata Cantina with a party of six and had an absolutely fantastic experience from start to finish. There were no points of concern at all just great food, friendly people, and a lively atmosphere. The food quality and taste were outstanding, with everything feeling authentic and freshly made. Standouts for us included the homemade chorizo sausages, corn, jalapeΓ±o poppers, and burritos all full of flavour and perfectly cooked. The margaritas were some of the best Iβve had in a long time, truly top notch! The staff were incredibly friendly and the service was excellent attentive without being intrusive, and they made our group feel very welcome. For a small-cost restaurant, it delivers big on quality and experience. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys genuine Mexican flavours and great hospitality. Tip: Itβs a popular spot, so booking ahead is a good idea!
Myself and my husband walked past this beautiful restaurant and it was packed so we knew that the food was amazing! We waited to be seated as there were no available tables, we ordered and OMG our meal was fast and beautiful!!! Absolutely loved it! The best Mexican food in NZ!
It really was the best Mexican food I have ever had, and Iβve eaten a LOT of Mexican! The staff were friendly and attentive and lots of smiles. I wish I was staying in Rotorua for longer to sample more of the menu. We shared Chicken Enchiladas and Elotes (Grilled corn on the cob) with Churros for takeaway desert. So delicious I forgot to take photos before it was half gone!
Lovely place. You must book especially if you are going there on the weekend. Friendly owner good service and nice food. Salsa was amazing among other things. Gracias amigos!

Our go-to for warm dishes and a friendly atmosphere, great for weekend nights out. We highly recommend the black bean dip, the three cheese dip, the tacos, and the churros. There are still dishes we haven't tried, and what we've tried so far are always yummy.
Despite looking like a Mexican themed restaurant, this place is great. Food is excellent with some minor changes from traditional. Large dinner portions. The staff are very friendly and attentive. Drinks were not strong, but were tasty. Prices were reasonable keeping in mind the food is very good. Outdoor seating has warm gas heaters. Good vegetarian options. Either book or be prepared to wait. Street parking can be a challenge. Highly recommended.
Everything about this place is great, first of all we were lucky to time it right and get a table without booking. But definitely book to make sure you aren't disappointed. Everything on the menu looks delicious, it was a hard choice. We ended up having the enchiladas and the chimichanga, which is grilled not deep fried. The enchiladas were very filling and delicious. Beans and rice came on the side. I also had the classic margarita which was also yum. You need to eat here !
Interesting experience, the chefs special was more spicy then we expected and the flavour was quite unique, it wasnt for us though. The nachos were quite nice I thought the cheese would of been melted more but when it got to us it looked like it had already hardened and stuck together in 1 large clump. The churros were great though.
