The Giants experience wine tasting was the highlight of my trip to Craggy Range, interesting and fun with a great selection of wines. The meal in the restaurant was good too, some beautiful dishes in taste and presentation. The service fell a bit behind, they were trying but not as well trained as you’d expect in a place like this.

If you are reading this review...Welcome to Craggy Range, where the breathtaking backdrop of Te Mata Peak looms large, casting its shadow over Hawke’s Bay like a proud sentinel. This is not just a winery, it’s a culinary must for anyone serious about food and wine. Established in 1998, this family owned haven has carved out a reputation for itself, producing wines that are as iconic as the landscape that cradles them. As you step onto the meticulously manicured grounds, you’re greeted by a choice of inviting dining spaces, both indoors and out that beckon you to explore. The restaurant is a celebration of seasonal, local produce, and we dove headfirst into the set menu, an experience that felt like a masterclass in flavor. We kicked things off with a duo of starters that set the tone for what was to come. The venison tartare, paired with a crispy potato rosti and a tarragon sauce, was a revelation. It was bold yet balanced, a true testament to the kitchen's skill. The potato and leek fritter with black garlic mayonnaise was a comforting nod to home, but elevated to something extraordinary. Next, we were treated to a first course that danced on the palate. The beetroot-cured salmon, dressed with lovage and horseradish cream, was a vibrant explosion of freshness, while the marinated octopus with vegetable escabeche and rouille brought a touch of Mediterranean flair that was utterly captivating. Then came the second act: roasted Hohepa halloumi drizzled with burnt honey, perfectly complemented by lemon-dressed beetroot and candied walnuts. And the crispy duck tonkatsu. A crunchy, savory delight that left us craving more. For the main event, we were served a slow cooked glazed lamb shoulder that was nothing short of divine. It arrived with roast potatoes and confit garlic, and the almond cream, anchovy, and harissa dressing added layers of complexity that made each bite a revelation. And just when we thought we couldn’t possibly eat another bite, dessert arrived: a fig leaf and yogurt soft serve, paired with poached apricots, burnt honey, and hazelnuts. It was a sweet, creamy finale that lingered long after the last spoonful. Throughout this culinary journey, the wines from Craggy Range were the perfect companions. The 2024 Kidnapper Chardonnay from Hawke’s Bay, the Single Vineyard Fynah from Gimblett Gravels, and the 2024 Pinot Noir from Martinborough were experiences in their own right, each matched to each course by one party in the wine biz. The service was impeccable attentive without being intrusive, ensuring that every need was met with a smile. Craggy Range isn’t just a meal; it’s an unforgettable experience that captures the essence of New Zealand’s culinary landscape. If you’re looking for a place where high quality food meets cracking wine in a setting that’s nothing short of spectacular, this is it. You’ll leave with your taste buds dancing and your heart full, already planning your return. 10/10 Craggy Range.

Grand feast in Paradise! It’s like scenic beauty which has been painted with a brush by God himself and within this scenic wonder lay a nice restaurant almost as beautiful! And the food and wine... Splendid! I ordered the shared menu starting with the Venison tartare followed by the raw local fish, marinated octopus, roasted hohepa halloumi and roasted crispy duck. All of this was very well presented like you expect in a top tier restaurant and tasted superb. I ordered the Graham's 40 year old Tawny Port which cost $50 for just 60 ml glass. But once again the best port wine I have ever had! The main course had lamb shoulder which was beautifully cooked and the meat just fell of the bone! Perfect! And this was followed by the best dish and one of the best desserts which I have ever had! The Spring Pavlova was start to finish full of flavor! You could actually taste at least 4 different flavors in every morsel which and they complimented each other to perfection! From the presentation, taste to the service, everything was absolute highest quality you could ever find anywhere in this world! It was a bit costly but worth every penny! Can't thank my brother and his wife for treating me to this divine feast right in the middle of paradise! Next time... my turn!

we had the winter Italian menu. It was incredible and good value! The service was the hilight of the night. The girl served us is friendly and funny. She gave me a box of chocolate truffles as to make up for put in my oyster order late. The Earl Grey was very nice. I asked what tea they use but then I forgot. :(

We had an absolutely outstanding evening last night to celebrate 7 incredible years of joy, peace and love. Thank you to Annalise, you were a gifted, beautiful table host, who has an incredible gift to connect with people, read the room and offer exceptional service. This is the first time I have tipped in 18 years! Thank you. The ambiance, the lighting, the fixtures, the fittings all led us to the real delight, which for us was the exquisite food which delighted the eye as well as the tastebuds with every mouthful. 12/10

The review options have “rooms” rather than menu (????) but…. The food is outstanding. The service is exceptional. Can’t fault either. Our only complaint was that if it’s nighttime and it’s winter, and you are seated beside the window, you have to wear a coat because it’s so cold. Why are there no curtains? We mentioned this and were told we wouldn’t see the gardens. Sorry…it’s nighttime and it’s winter! No one should have to eat their dinner wearing their coat.

Amazing restaurant with an exceptional menu and drinks list. Craggy Range vineyard is such a beautiful spot, located in the valley below Te Mata Peak. Catch it on a nice day and the views towards the hills and countryside are hard to beat! Hamish Dorrington Kakapo Business Sales

I would 6 star this place if I could! The location and venue are amazing, but the staff and service take it up to the next level. The people here are incredible! Knowledgeable, and helpful - they make Craggy Range! I took the wine tasting and the lady (Maddie) was incredible, so passionate about wine and shared that enthusiasm, a very educational and informative session. Then we had dinner and the dishes we delightful; creative and full of flavour - we went with the wine matched set menu and I would highly recommend this option. You get to try and learn about so many more of their wines and the local dishes and sourced ingredients. Take a taxi. Enjoy the wine and food. Or better yet, try the on site accommodation.
