This is a unique time capsule and an example of very clever late 19th/early 20th century innovations in domestic architecture/technology. Absolutely fascinating and guides were encyclopedic in their knowledge. Even the family history was attention grabbing. Everybody in our group was impressed with this place. 6 (or 7) out of 5 stars.

Beautiful home. Definitely book ahead for a daily tour to enjoy this place fully ($27.5 for one adult). My guide Kirsten was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The tour itself last about 1hr. I think there are about 4 or 5 tours /day and only 10 per tour group, so I advice booking in advance. They have lots of interesting stuff inside the house with a lot of history as the family is a prominent wealthy family during early Dunedin history. You are allowed to take picture inside (without flash), despite what the website said, which were much appreciated. My only warning is that it is located up hill and the streets are quite steep. Be careful if you are not very fit and plan to walk there.

Olveston house is well worth the visit. Free parking and wonderful tours. Little gift shop. The house was an absolute delight, wonderfully kept and the restored car in the garage. Gardens were just as nice. This is still a used home with the top two floors lived in and you can book private events and join them for afternoon tea, evening meals or hosted events of interest. You will not be disappointed. Well worth the visit

What to say. Fantastic does not cover it, the house tour is informative, the house is gorgeous, a proper well kept time capsule. Everything is right, because it is all original to the house as it was. The gardens are free to walk around. So we'll kept. A little jewel in town.

    - Guided tours avail throughout the day - free to walk the grounds & go through reception & gift shop on the bottom floor - could easily spend a day here, there is so much to see! - the grounds, home & everything in it have been restored & maintained with absolute care & precaution - def recommend others to visit here even if you don't do a tour. It's quite breathtaking.

If you’re a history lover, a family with a free afternoon or a local looking to explore then this is the place for you. A highlight of our Dunedin trip, the tour guide takes you around this magical house that feels alive with inticing history. The guides are what makes this so special. They are genuine and kind people that make sure every question is answered and each experience is unique. Gorgeous location and simply cannot recommend enough.

Amazing site with incredible tour guides which told us the story of the family and the history of the construction of the house including where items such as the wallpaper where imported from. Also was told the beautiful dining room and be rented out for functions which would make a mesmerising birthday dinner. Would definitely recommend a visit!

Olverston Historic House in Dunedin is a very interesting attraction to visit. Built in 1906 it still contains most or the original furnishings, so it provides a brilliant snapshot of what home life looked like in Dunedin more than 100 years ago. The tour guide was excellent and full of interesting knowledge. This is definitely a must do for anyone interested in early colonial history. Highly recommend.

A great historic home with a somewhat sad ending. The mansion is top class and I haven't seen anything like it in NZ. Even the 1919 family car is available for viewing and is in mintcondition, after being fully restored to it original state. The Gardens are also worth a good stroll around, and the flowers are stunning, as per the photos. At $25, in Jan 2023, it's a must do in Christchurch. Thank you.
