What an amazing place...I needed somewhere to attend an urgent zoom meeting on behalf of my son...very welcoming... Sarah even loaned me her laptop when my phone failed to connect to the meeting...what an asset to the community there was so much going on there with different groups of people...great vibe!

A warm welcoming place. I attend one of the SayGo exercise groups and find it easy to get advice on what else is available There are many courses and information about what else is happening in the community. The staff and volunteers are kind and supportive they are also very professional in the positions they hold. The monthly meetings held on Monday are well attended and interesting. There are several groups that use the Community Centre which in turn gives the Community a place to learn and get to know other people.

Despite what the opening hours state on the Google page or on the door of the centre, I've driven there four times to drop off lids for recycling and only once has it been open. Twice I have met other people there trying to do the same thing. It would be more economic and better for the environment to put them in the red bin.

A little bit of history about this place. The St Albans Community Centre, owned by the Christchurch City Council, and managed by the St Albans Residents Association, was opened on April 12, 2021. It replaced a temporary building that stood on the site 1049 Colombo St for about 5 years, which in turn replaced an unreinforced concrete and brick building erected 100 years previously as a small public library, which in turn had its roots in nearby Dover St. The library, run by volunteers closed down in 1996, and a community centre opened in late 1998. The old library building was badly damaged in the earthquakes that hit Christchurch on 4 September 2010 when a side wall fell out. The mortal blow fell on 22 February 2011 when it become obvious it was no longer a repair job and it was demolished during the winter months.

I take my children there for the fairy dance classes. It is an amazing facility. I can browse on the internet or read book while the kids are enjoying their dance. Wonderful. I wish everywhere in the city had such a facility. Also they have the best free local newspaper ever. Fantastic.
