⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4/5 – Peaceful and historic, but not quite the “hidden gem” we expected We visited Taitua Arboretum on Boxing Day 2025 after hearing several recommendations and reading about its history. The story behind this place is genuinely lovely — John and Bunny Mortimer began planting trees and shrubs here back in 1973, originally to provide shelter and shade for animals. Their lifelong passion for growing both native and exotic species eventually transformed the land into a full arboretum, which they gifted to the people of Hamilton in 1997. Knowing that background definitely adds appreciation for the space and the decades of care that went into it. The arboretum covers around 20 hectares and features a network of walking tracks that link lakes, woodland gardens, open grassy areas, and plenty of mature trees. It’s a peaceful environment, and one of the first things we noticed was how quiet it was — not busy at all, which is rare for a public park on a holiday. If you’re looking for a calm stroll without crowds, this is definitely a plus. There are also picnic spots scattered throughout, and dogs are welcome as long as they’re kept on a lead. Facilities like toilets and a fluoride‑free water tap are available, which is convenient for families or anyone planning a longer visit. However, despite the peaceful atmosphere, the arboretum didn’t quite live up to the “hidden gem” description we were expecting. The walking tracks are pleasant but fairly simple, and the scenery felt a bit underwhelming compared to other nature reserves or gardens in the region. The ponds, which could have been a highlight, were unfortunately quite polluted with algae and didn’t look very healthy. It gave the impression that the water areas haven’t been maintained as well as the rest of the grounds, which took away from the overall experience. There are free‑range chickens wandering around the carpark, which some people might find charming, but if you’ve lived overseas or visited rural areas, it’s nothing particularly unusual. The tracks themselves are easy and suitable for all ages, but they don’t offer much variety beyond a few ponds and clusters of trees. For us, the most interesting part was actually the sign at the entrance, which gives a nice overview of the arboretum’s history. We were recommended this place as a must‑see spot, but it didn’t quite match that level of excitement. It’s a peaceful location for a short walk, and the history behind it is meaningful, but overall it felt a bit plain and lacking in standout features. We probably wouldn’t make a return trip, but I can see how others — especially locals looking for a quiet, easy stroll — might enjoy it more. Still, the tranquility, the mature trees, and the thoughtful legacy behind the arboretum earn it a solid four stars.

This is a great nature walk for people of all ages and great for dog owners except those who don't adhere to the rules by letting there dogs of the leash which I saw today while walking my dog it only takes one incident of an attack of any kind and legislation will bank dogs from entering the park there are plenty of signs informing dog owners that dogs must be on a leash at all times while in the park and for those few who ignore this simple rule jeopardize the park for the rest of us dog owners who use the place to exercise our pets thanks lady you know who you are

A nice place to walk. Great for people with dogs. Would have liked more/bigger labels on the different trees. Would be willing to donate to help make it happen (current admission is free).

Taitua offers a quick, brisk, and steady walk – perfect for a breath of fresh air. You’ll enjoy the sounds of birds, farm animals and the calming feel of nature along the way. The only downside was the nearby shooting range, which did take away from the tranquility a bit. However, if you’re a gun enthusiast, you may see it as a unique touch rather than a drawback.

I went on Sunday 28 August 2022, with my daughter, and three year old granddaughter. I had never been before, and I was so stunned by the beauty, and complete natural way that it was left to its own devices. The hens, roosters, and ducks, were so cute, and friendly, and my granddaughter was delighted. We walked slowly, and tried to take in everything, which was quite difficult, because there was so much to see. But sitting by one of the small ponds, was so tranquil, and very peaceful. The perfect place to get away from a fast paced city. I truly loved it, and having come from a rural setting not too long ago, it was like a haven. I think that it is a huge plus for Hamilton, and the Waikato in general. I'm definitely going again.
