   I don’t usually leave reviews, but I’m writing this for public awareness. I ordered a salmon donburi shortly before closing time, and this was the quality of the meal I received. I understand this is not a high-end restaurant and the price is relatively affordable, so at first I thought the salmon might just look slightly off due to the hot weather. I ate a small portion but couldn’t continue and ended up leaving about half of it. Over the following two days, I became extremely unwell and experienced severe stomach and digestive issues, to the point where I was unable to eat anything at all. After thinking it through, this meal seems to be the most likely cause, which is why I feel it’s important to share my experience. I’m not sure what the food quality is like during the day, but at closing time the rice also tasted stale. I also noticed dust-like particles on the edges of the paper container. Given this level of quality, I question whether this food should have been sold at all. I genuinely hope no one else has to go through a similar experience, which is why I’m leaving this review.

   October 2025: I’ve always given this place five stars and even proudly told my friends that they serve good food. I was planning to bring this meal to a friend in the hospital and told her it would be a nice salmon, but I was really disappointed today. I ordered sashimi for $16, asked for half rice and extra veggies instead, but as you can see in the last photo, it doesn’t look worth the price. This order really let me down. Very disappointed. September 2025: Fast, economical, and tasty food! I always go for the curry of the day. I’ve also tried their sashimi tuna (maguro don), salmon, teriyaki salmon, and chicken katsu don (a bit too sweet for my taste, but still good anyway) and they never disappoint. Tried their croquet, prawn and chicken sides. Will keep coming back.

   TL;DR: Highly recommended! Not so pricey and yet their foods are super good and definitely satiates. I highly recommend the Salmon Katsus and Teriyaki Burger. This is a super overdue review as we've been enjoying JDY for almost a year now. I'm eating this Teriyaki Burger as I'm writing this review. This really triggered me to finally make this review as it's just too damn good! Normally, we'd only order rice meals, and my favorites are the Salmons, and my partner loves the katsus, esp the pork one. They're really bang of the buck, tastes great, super filling and not too expensive. Most of the time I'd avoid the burger because I am not aware of good Japanese burgers. This time, I finally tried it. I'm glad I felt a bit adventurous today. The patty is thicc and juicy, one of the best burgers I've had here in NZ, literally! The bun seems very simple, but I super like it as well. The staff (owner?) are very nice and friendly as well. Highly recommended!

   Super chill place and the food is amazing, massive portion sizes for the price, and a large is only 0.50c more than a regular. Cool little student deals too and being so close to UOA it’s a great idea to come here.

   Definitely was a very tasty and filling meal. If you are going skint on your budget this is a very tasty place for a nice tasty meal and also fair priced one! Note if you want the Japanese chicken katsu curry you may need to come in lunch time as they ran out by dinner time. I had the Japanese mild curry which was tasty and good portion perhaps more vegetables were missing into the curry. Good place I would have visited again if I had the time. You can also have food to take away.

   Have come to this place for several years and the pricing is still amazing. The food is delicious and the pricing is just incompatible to any competitor(extremely cheap food). The staff is always very polite at any time of the day, there’s relaxing music and also manga to read.
