Onggojip is one of my favourite Korean stew restaurants. They specialize in Lamb Nourishing Soup (Yang Yeongyangtang) and Beef Nourishing Soup (Sogogi Yeongyangtang). You can either dine in or take it away. My wife and I went tonight since we both caught a cold and wanted something to help us recover quickly. The soups here are perfect for that: warm, hearty, and comforting. I ordered the lamb version, while my wife went with the beef. As always, the meal was fantastic. I love their rich soups, flavourful sauces, and tender meat. The kimchi is also excellent and pairs perfectly with the stews. I ended up finishing my entire pot without a trace. Highly recommended!

Lamb Youngyang Tang – 9/10 The best lamb soup!! Funny thing is, I’ve never heard of this dish in Korea or Hong Kong — I guess the chef might’ve invented it here in NZ, blending local ingredients with Korean flavours. Well done! Kimchi – 10/10 It tasted like freshly made kimchi — spicy, vibrant, and with a bit of a “Thai-style” kick to it. I loved it! Seafood Pancake – 8/10 Thick, packed with ingredients, and super crispy! It reminded me of the Korean pancake I had a long time ago in a traditional market in Korea. Loved that authentic flavour! Overall The decor is old and, honestly, has no particular style. The environment isn’t the best either — it sometimes gives off a “not-too-clean” feeling, even though there’s nothing visibly dirty. That said, the food is genuinely delicious. In my opinion, food quality always comes first — that’s why I keep going back. If you’re planning to visit, please try the lamb soup. Don’t say you’ve been there if you haven’t had it! ——— I’ve shared more food snaps and little life moments over on IG @cornerlife._ — feel free to check it out!

The Spicy Beef Soup is absolutely addictive abd delicious —tender beef, rich broth, and just the right amount of heat. Tried the Beef bone soup with boiled rice yesterday, and it was tangy. For two people, it was $49, which is pretty reasonable. Comes with two side simple dishes. The restaurant is not big. It is quite cozy.

Its outside unprentious look is deceiving. Delicious food. Quick service. The lamb soup was super delicious as well as the pezos. (seafood pancake / pizza). Mostly Korran soups and the cheaper beef soup was also great and well worth the $.

They refused to provide soup bowls without any explanations. My friend and I ordered the $28 lamb soup, would like to ask two bowls for drinking soup. Three young waiters working on the day advised they don’t have empty bowls, even though they have bowls for containing rice. Therefore, they offered two shallow empty dishes for us to drink soup, which was totally ridiculous. One of the shallow dishes was not even cleaned. I accidentally saw they gave the other table two bowls for containing their ginger beer to share when I was about to leave. Really bad and disappointed experience. We used to order a lot lamb soup for takeaway when they dine in was not available.

The lamb soup was delicious and rich with big chunks of tender lamb. Dumplings were also very good and love the fillings. Side dishes were yum but a bit spicy. The male staff were very nice and friendly:)

Food taste pretty authentic. The service is negative stars if I can. Menu has limited English translation and cannot be understood easily. One staff unable to answer any questions but answer yes yes. The other staff was full of dirty words even in front of kids. Trolley crashes on customer shoes, and instead of apologies, dirty words again. Not acceptable service. Won't be here again. Not recommended unless you want to be rudely treated.

For those who have access to it, I’d strongly recommend you to try the lamb soup. I went there every week while I was in Auckland, and then I left for China, Thailand and Indonesia with the belief that it’s just another home dish that could be found in most Korean restaurants but I couldn’t find any lamb soup that could stand comparison with this, needless to say most of them don’t even serve lamb. I miss it every now and then for six years and even regret I didn’t take proper pictures of these but just one takeaway. Btw the kimchi and radish are the best in the world to me even though they are our local dish in NE China. Plus the chilli sauce is like an indecipherable palate mystery.
