Amazing place. Several tracks. We chose the simplest track, but if you're prepared, you'll find a lot of scenic views.

About a 45-minute drive from Auckland, Whatipu Beach is one of the most stunning black sand beaches on the West Coast. We started from the Omanawanui Track carpark, where picnic tables sit under blooming pōhutukawa trees — a beautiful spot in summer. From there, a sandy trail gradually turns darker until it becomes deep black, the result of ancient volcanic activity rich in iron minerals. The sand feels soft underfoot, with a slight warmth from the sun, and shimmers faintly like metal in the light. The walk to the beach takes around 20 minutes, through wildflowers and grasses, with only the sound of wind and distant surf. When we arrived, an endless stretch of black sand opened before the blue Pacific, with a rocky outcrop and lighthouse standing offshore. Driftwood lay scattered across the beach, and we had the place almost entirely to ourselves — quiet, raw, and unforgettable. The scenery is dramatic yet peaceful: waves rolling in, seabreeze carrying salt in the air, and patterns of wind-shaped ripples dancing across the sand. At low tide, the wet sand becomes a natural mirror, perfectly reflecting the massive coastal rocks. Looking back, the lone piece of driftwood we sat on seemed like part of the landscape itself, bleached by years of sea and sun. Whatipu is remote, pristine, and nearly untouched by crowds. A place where nature feels powerful yet calming — highly recommended for those wanting an authentic West Coast experience.

Absolutely beautiful beach, and massive. The most popular portion, near the carpark, is not so large but if you walk around the point it goes on for hours. The stars are really nice at night, but there aren't any signs so it's easier to get lost in the dark. There are lots of dunes, but if you try to cut through them you may find yourself in the marshes, which is not recommended. The sunset is beautiful on a nice day, but it is a very exposed area so in bad weather it can be a very trying place to be.

Whatipu Beach is an excellent location, endless strip of black sand tacked away from the city, that offers stunning views of the Tasman Sea. The water is rough, as most west coast beaches tend to be, and is popular with surfers. You need to be a confident swimmer (or nuts!) to take a dip here and know enough about rips, strong currents, and changing conditions. There are no lifeguards on this beach. I would advise you to enjoy the rugged beauty and wilderness of this place without touching the water, that's what we did anyway. Plenty of fun to have in many other ways.

Great hidden beach on a gravel road but still not too far form auckland CBD.we were lucky enough to see this beautiful place on our last day in NZ and it did not disappoint. Decent fishing from the multiple rock locations with a handful of streams that the kids can play in (water is hot if the weather is). Definitely worth checking out

This is my favourite beach in Auckland as it is far away from the busy areas and in its own hidden location. It takes an hour to get out here from Auckland City, maybe longer depending and the last 20 minutes is spent on a dirt/gravel road which probably turns a lot of people off. Drivers are not very considerate and not only drive too fast but fail to keep left while others pass in the other direction. However, the reward is huge if you make it to the beach. There is a 10-15 minute walk from the carpark on the sand and the beach itself is amazing. It is nestled on the Manukau Harbour and Tasman Sea entrances with views to the south. There are no lifeguards here so swim with caution if you choose to do so. There are long walks to the north and areas to explore here. The Whatipu Caves can also be accessed, which is a 15 minute or so walk from the carpark (in another direction). You can also attempt the Omanawanui Track which is one of if not the best track with spectacular views of the harbour. Just be prepared, it is a very long track should you choose to complete the whole course. This is really just a magnificent beach and the best of the West Auckland beaches in my opinion. It has a private feeling and is less packed than Piha and Bethells.

Very nice place by the sea. The gravel road in between the forest is ok. Lots of fishermen. Cheers

The beach is unique. And there is more than a beach. You will find awesome mountains around, that you can hike to reach outstanding lookout. The site with its regional park is worth to explore.

Beautiful, as many other West Coast, beaches. A bit further away from the water than Piha for example, so be prepared to walk for about 15 min. Keep your jandals on, the black sand is extremely hot around noon.
