Red Rocks Reserve offers a striking coastal landscape that highlights New Zealand’s natural beauty and rugged charm. Visitors should note that access to certain parts of the reserve requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle due to the rough terrain. For those wishing to observe the seals, the best time to visit is after 6:00 pm, when they are more commonly seen resting along the shoreline, making the experience both memorable and rewarding.

Amazing walk for the view. Walk from starting point till red rocks and seal watching was only 1.5hrs or less. It's worth the view.

Relatively easy walk, although some sections are quite rocky so have good walking or hiking shoes on. It's about an hour out to the seals from the carpark. Past the carpark is only accessible for off road vehicles. We were lucky enough to spot around 15-20 seals the day we went which made the walk more than worth it. 100% reccomend a visit.

We took the walk to Red Rocks and the Devil's Gate at Sinclair Head where there were loads of seals. It isn't a long walk, an hour or so each way from the visitor centre but the going is awkward on rocks, stones and gravel and it left my knees feeling like I'd walked a lot longer. It was a lovely day but in winter most of the walk is shaded in the morning.

Only 4WD vehicles can be driven on the rough road. It is not joke, seriously. We have seen 7 seals in different spots. They are very lazy and cute.

During the right months, if you went near and past the Devil's Gate, you'll see lots of fur seals. And can get quite close to them. It can get pretty windy and cold as it's exposed but bring the right clothes and walking shoes and it's a great trip out. I'll estimate about 14,000 steps from the car park (return)

Great coastal track just round from the red rocks, gorgeous at sunset on a clear day @Ldienes on instagram

Rather a long walk if you don't have a 4x4 but fairly interesting birds and rock colors

Breathtaking place to go to. Need a car, obviously, but so worth it! There was noone else at the time we arrived -seals excluded- and we came right before sunset. The photos do not so justice to the place. It feels like we are on another planet. Noone else but us and the seals, amazing view, and we were extremely lucky with the weather. Highly recommend if you're in the area ✨

Long, yet totally worth it walk out here. These seals just chill out while you can take as many photos as you'd like. If you're bringing a camera, (which I highly recommend) definitely bring a telephoto lens to be able to get up close to the seals, since physically getting close would be rather dangerous!
