Such an amazing walk to get here. The view is amazing on a good day! If itβs cold or windy, definitely take a jacket as it gets super cold up here. You can also get out of the southerly if you pop behind the shed at the top. Definitely recommend the hike to the top. Steep, exposed and rocky though!

Good tracks and pretty well maintained of you stick to the main walkways. The view from top, once you get there, is worth every drop of sweat.

There are different routes for doing this. The one I did before was from the Broken Hill Carpark near Spicer Landfill. This route is very scenic and passes through the Colonial Knob Reserve. The second option is to start from Camp Elsdon. Which is the one I describe here: The first portion was the Te Ara Utiwai. Starting from the Camp Elsdon car park on Raiha Street. A gentle climb to the Rangituhi Lookout through native bush. Reaching a height of 346.8m over 5.13km. There is a steep 1.8km mostly steps option as well for this section. The weather was changing fast. By the time I reached the Rangituhi Lookout clouds were moving in thick and fast. From here it was a gentle 2.1 km uphill walk to the Colonial Knob Summit at 468 m. On a clear day it offers views of the Inland Kaikoura Range in the south to Mt Taranaki in the north-west. But today I barely managed to understand the blue color of the sea in Wellington! Bring clothes for changing weather and carry a water bottle for sure.

Great on a good day. Hard slog to get there but well worth it. Bring water and warm clothes.
