Delicious brunch with my friend. Excellent coffees, food and service.

I have never had such a poor experience as my morning tea at cafe on the square. After looking in the cabinet and selecting what I would probably buy I waited and waited for the lady right in front of me to finish mucking around with whatever she was doing before she even acknowledged me let alone take my order. There were no pleasantries and the two staff on we're both completely disinterested in what they were doing for their customers. The drink was served and that was fine. The pie I ordered was served along with a knife and fork wrapped in a serviette. The knife had food attached to it still. The pie was warm on the outside and still fridge cold on the inside making it one of the most unpleasant meals I've had in a long time. I have never needed to make such a negative report on an eating facility anywhere in New Zealand before now. This cafe on the day I was there was horrid.

Coffee made with Soy milk, all rather lumpy on top, not a smooth coffee as one might expect. The Cheese Scone purchased was tiny, little or no raising of the dough, obviously and had the consistency of hard tack. Had it been heated up, there were no oils or liquid in the scone to give it My moisture or fluffiness. Bit squeezed for space if busy and punters want to sit in. Didn't try any hot food, so can't critique. Like many cafes in Wellington, the amount of piercing noise emanating from the Barista knocking out old coffee grains from the equipment can be deafening and actually painful to the sensitive ear. Surely some piece of equipment which would limit the racket is available? Most of the fare available in the cabinet was sugar based, though I was there at mid morning. Fairly useful meeting place pre and post library visit which can be accessed through a door from the Cafe. All in all, not a great visit to the Cafe in terms of fare and ambience. Also had an Earl Gray tea which was flavorsome. Not much damage can be done from throwing boiling water over a tea bag, though I'm sure there are many connoisseurs out there who will rightly disagree!

Absolutely appalling everything was inedible and undercooked milkshakes were only half full and warm. DO NOT EAT HERE

Today I took my grandson in for a fluffy and myself a coffee at 10.30am. The floor was disgusting, very dirty, the legs of some of the tables were dirty and rusty. A very very small slice was $4.50. The lady was lovely but the man was unfriendly. I also had to wipe down the highchair myself before putting my grandsone into it. What a shame as a great spot.
