TLDR: definitely recommend. Cool wee shop. Longer version: As small fish n chip shop go, this is a cool wee place. Situated next to campus but they don't hold back on doing a good job just because most customers are students. The chips are soooooo crispy and light. They have the standard 3 fish varieties; hoki, sole and blue cod. They also have other fish options, depending on fish markets; snapper, gurnard, monk, deep sea cod, etc and update the board as needed. They have they other regular deep fry options and burgers. Things that are labelled spicy are only mildly hot but they can go spicier on request.

About Us
The kitchen at The Flying Squid takes a classic fish-and-chips path and lets the food speak. Blue cod and other fillets arrive fresh with light batter. Value feels fair for the spread. Frontβofβhouse runs with calm, helpful energy. Combinations read bold but stay balanced.

The best fish and chip place i have ever been to. You get a bucketful of shoestring fries for very cheap. The burgers are great and very cheap. Theyre not especially fancy but they are always fresh, have a good amount of ingredients and sauce, and are more satisfying and more consistently good than burger king or any of the other gross disappointing burger joints in Dunedin. The food is never cold. This establishment understands the importance of temperature when it comes to fast food. The people running it seem lovely. Honestly, some of these reviews are like, "The food was amazing! Three stars!". What will it take to get those final two stars? Are the portions too generous? Are the fish fillets too fat and flavourful? If you want fish and chips, you will not be disappointed EVER.

Extensive menu, friendly service and good value for money. Received free sauces and extra pineapple fritters! Fries are available in good sizes which is grest. Everything tasted good so not disappointing at all for a good Friday fish n chip night. Unfortunately only got a pic of the yummy battered sausage!!

2 stars given for delicious fresh chips! But unfortunately the fish was inedible. I donβt know how to describe it, but it had the texture of rubber and we couldnβt chew through it. Squid rings and scallops I ordered were the standard frozen ones, so quality as to be expected from those. They had a big menu though, so perhaps other things are great!

We travel 4 km out of way to get our fries here as the oil used is always good quality. I'm very diligent about avoiding plastic packaging. I'm always accommodated in my request for paper wrapping and using my cloth reusable bag.
