Rural Tours housed us (2 families of 4) at Big Bird Waitomo which turned out to be sub-standard, un-hygienic, old accomodation equivalent to a run down back packer accomodation. ( I have photos to prove it ). Their charges/commission were exorbitant and took no responsibility for the fact that they had full control ( without disclosing accomodation until full payment was received ). We paid the equivalent to 4 to 5-star prices for a 3 bedroom appartment in Auckland. Rural Tours have a very laxed accomodation vetting process all under tge banner of providing a " farm stay " experience and wash their hands very quickly of any responsibility once approached about the disparity in accomodation cost versus what we got. By-pass Rural Tours altogether and save yourself a great deal of time/money and stress if things go wrong or rather not quite as expected. Personally I think they do Tourism NZ a disservice and give true farm stay hosts a bad name.
