Brilliant service has helped me for a few years now, counseling service was professional and respectful. They have helped me massively.
The men's centre provides low cost counselling for men and couples. A free first initial appointment can help find funding for sensitive ACC claims or through WINZ. All counsellors are qualified and have accreditation through the Counselling Association. Some free counselling is available provided by students.
Been on and off here for several years and the impact this place has made on my life has been outstanding! The men's centre is a warm and friendly environment and the councilors that work there are very welcoming that make you feel comfortable talking about whatever it is that's on your mind Can't recommend this place enough!
I recently completed several months of counseling sessions at the Canterbury Men's Centre, and I am incredibly grateful for the positive impact it has had on my life. My counselor, Barry, was an exceptional guide throughout this journey. His approach was a perfect balance of challenging me when necessary while also validating and empathising with my emotions and experiences. Barry’s insights and support taught me invaluable life lessons, particularly around establishing and maintaining boundaries. These lessons have been transformative, helping me navigate my relationships, work-life balance, and interactions with others more effectively. Barry's empathetic nature made me feel understood and respected, and his ability to gently push me out of my comfort zone was exactly what I needed to grow. Applied for an initial assessment, took a couple of weeks. Got seen and it went great so was awaiting a proper counseling session. 4 days after I gave a call and they didn't know what I was about but told them my availability again. Took 14 working days (excluding weekends and public holidays so roughly a couple of weeks) for me to personally go in and let them know it wasn't good enough. Couldn't find my details again til I got a call from the director of the place later in the afternoon for an apology. I feel like critical cases should be contacted 24hrs and non critical cases 48-72 hours. Nobody is making an appointment because they're fine and as my first interaction with any counseling or therapy it has absolutely soured my trust about these kind of places whatsoever. I shouldn't have had to chase up for an appointment or be forgotten about, any update would have been fine. Really not good.
Just had an initial assessment with Barry, not an actual counselling session but sure felt like one. I really got something out of it. I'm hyper-sensitive to judgement, disapproval or impatience, and Barry was incredibly easy for me to talk to. He listened to everything I had to say patiently and compassionately, and clearly showed genuine care, empathy, and intuition. You're going to make an excellent counsellor Barry!
A very helpful service that covers a lot of mental health areas. I'd recommend this service to any male needing support regardless of what the support is as if they can't help you, they'll find out who can and put you in contact. They'll even contact someone for you with your permission if it's necessary. This, and the Men's Centre which is next door are five star services. Nothing's ever a problem to them. These services are the only ones I really trust in the Christchurch area as they've done things other services have let me down on.
I was left feeling worse when leaving my first my first appointment, after emailing in a complaint about the appointment, I received a less than satisfactory reply. UPDATE & Reply to owner:, there was no offer to meet, just a simple couple of sentences which said "Thanks for your email. I will take you out of the diary. Take care NOELINE. this was a less than satisfactory reply and all I would like is not to happen to anyone else who is struggling. It has not been great for my mental state and relationship.
The best experience I had was finding Paul D. This gentleman is an absolute brilliant person to deal with. Nothing was a problem to him. I was having issues with my past re my sexual abuse from the age of seven to 21. Plus the work I did in funeral business. It all became to much for me to deal with on my own, I had thought of committing suicide. Then I found Paul D he got me the help I so needed. I can't speak more highly of him simply the best. Thankyou from the bottom of my heart.
I came to the Christchurch Mens Centre for counseling during a particularly rough patch and had my first appointment a few weeks after I first contacted. The first appointment went well and we arranged to meet again a week later, however he never showed up. I waited outside for 45 minutes, rang the doorbell and knocked every 5 minutes or so but he never showed up. He never made contact with me again, even after I'd left a message asking why he hadn't shown up to the appointment.
