The Lower Huia Dam is about a 40-minute drive from Auckland and makes a nice short trip into the WaitΔkere Ranges. From the carpark, itβs an easy walk to the reservoir area. The surroundings are peaceful, with farmland and hills nearby, and sometimes sheep grazing in the fields. The highlight is the bellmouth spillway β a rare circular overflow structure that looks like a giant vertical funnel. Itβs quite impressive to see in person and not something you often come across in New Zealand. The dam top also gives good views of the lake and surrounding hills. Itβs generally very quiet, and we hardly saw other visitors during our walk. On a rainy day, the atmosphere felt fresh and calm, and the whole place had a very tranquil vibe. Worth a stop if youβre exploring the west coast or the WaitΔkere Ranges.

Road shut to public, park at the end and take a 5-10 min dawdle from the car park up to the dam face. Longer walk available through to upper Huia dam. Serene!

What a spectacular place! You really appreciate all the work that goes into providing water for the city! It's a bit of a drive through tight winding roads, takes approximately 40 mins from the city. The path to the top of the dam is all tarmac so very easy to follow, however there is a steep slope to the top, noting major just something to be aware off. Regardless it's still a brilliant place! There are clean public toilets located here as well and ample of parking at the start.

The image listed for this isn't of this dam it is in fact the Lower Nihoputu Dam which is near Laingholm. The Lower Huia Reservoir is a very pleasant walk, parking is along the access road. Through the gates you take the access road, a small suspension bridge crosses the stream and is accessed from the road and worth stopping and looking at the stream. The track continues up into the Waitakere Ranges but is closed due to Kauri dieback. From there you continue to walk up past the pumping station and up onto the dam wall. If you walk across the dam to the overflow you can walk out over the reservoir and look down into the pipeline which is funky. The track up to the Upper Huia Dam is on the West side of the reservoir and is a track easy to walk on but undulates with the terrain, plenty of interesting views along the way. I've not made it as far as the tunnels yet and signs do warn that they are dangerous from falling rocks.
