The young lady stocking the shelves was very polite, knowledgeable but on checkout a totally different story. Was queried why I wasn't a member then almost told off for my selection of cat food. I didn't feel very welcome from the south African sounding gentleman and certainly won't be going back.
I’ve been a regular customer and always supported this store, but had a really disappointing experience recently. The lady with blue hair who I believe may be the manager muttered something under her breath, calling me a thief and making what sounded like racist remarks. I was shocked and deeply hurt. After spending so much money here over time, being treated like that is unacceptable. It’s a real shame because the girl with green hair has always been amazing, friendly, helpful, and genuinely caring toward customers. She’s the reason I kept coming back. Unfortunately, after this experience, I’ll be driving the extra distance to shop elsewhere. Very poor behaviour from someone in a leadership role.
I’ve kept fish for years. I went in to buy a single fish to help cycle a new tank — nothing unreasonable. They refused, citing cycling concerns. Fair enough, except a staff member then told me they let the nitrates in their own tanks reach “about 40 before we change them.” So they won’t sell a fish to a responsible hobbyist, but they’re fine keeping their own fish in borderline toxic conditions. Doesn’t add up.
This is where I buy everything my dogs needs. The staff are amazing and friendly. I always get what I'm looking for. Highly recommended. My dog Bear agrees as well.

Great staff was greeted with a warm smile , was helped to find what I was looking for at a great price... But to be honest it was the staff that made it easy to give 5 stars.
I usually go to Animates KaIwharawhara and I assumed (wrongly) that all Animates stores were of the same high standard......I was wrong! I went into the Porirua store for new tank lights, based on the 3 staff members reaction, you'd think I'd asked them to butcher a live animal. I went around the corner, and bought the lights without any fuss. Sort yourselves out Porirua.
I have been to this store a few times. I am always asked to the point of feeling interrogated about the fish in my fishtank etc. While I understand the questions is designed to give better advice, the last time I went to find something to manage the algae bloom in my 20L tank I was told it was due to the 10 guppies in the tank. The advice was to reduce the "stock" to 4 guppies, or buy a larger tank. I was not happy with the advice and did my own research, bought a small UV filter and ran it for one week. The algae bloom was sorted out 100% and the tank returned to normal. Animates does not stock these UV filters and the staff does not seem to know about their existence. Photos attached was taken about 8 days apart.
