The blue of the concrete was the only thing that didn't sleep in the heart of the village. By day, the Havelock North pools were a cacophony of tanned limbs, the smell of coconut oil, and the sharp whistle of lifeguards. But as the sun dipped behind the Te Mata Peak, the water became a dark mirror, hiding secrets that the village preferred to whisper about rather than solve. The pool had seen it all. It was the center of a town that looked perfect on a postcard but carried the weight of real-world friction. There was the summer the peace broke—not with a splash, but with a shout. In the heat of a December afternoon, the invisible lines of the territory were crossed. The primary colors of the pool—the yellow slides and blue tiles—were suddenly blurred by the presence of rivals. Families grabbed their towels and fled as a sudden, sharp violence erupted on the concrete. That day changed the pool’s soul; the high fences grew taller, and the unblinking eyes of cameras were installed to watch the water where once only the stars had looked down. Then there was the silent tragedy, the story that local teenagers still tell each other as a dare. On a night when the air was too still, shadows scaled those fences. They didn't see the danger in the silence. They didn't understand that the thermal blanket stretched across the surface was a shroud, not a floor. When the water finally stilled that night, the village woke to a different kind of quiet—a legal and communal grief that forced every lock to be tightened and every gate to be bolted. Even the very water seemed to turn on the village once. There was the year the taps ran sour, and the year the air around the pool grew heavy with the yellow sting of a chemical leak. Each time, the village green would be cordoned off, the bright plastic tape fluttering in the wind like a warning that even a place of joy has its price. Now, as the Kaitiaki walk the perimeter in the summer heat, the pool remains. It is a place of bright laughter and icy treats, but if you sit long enough under the shade of the trees, you can feel the layers of the past. The pool is a vessel for the village’s memories—the heat of the fight, the chill of the midnight water, and the resilience of a community that keeps coming back to the blue, hopeful center of its world. Would you like me to find the history of another local landmark, or perhaps write a similar story about the "travelling" clock tower in Palmerston North?

Pools are nice i wish the lane pool was warmer like i would be happier if it was like 28C or 29C also it would be good if they would add a bulk head in the main pool as its 33M and i prefer 50M and 25M Pools would love to see it become an indoor pool sometime in the future

We went to the pools today it was great until ,we went to go buy something and they took 15 mins and they STILL Didn't come and multiple staff members walked passed and looked at us. So we just left. Not sure if I am going to go there again. Have better customer service please. Thank you.

Two visits 7 days apart, all pools were green with loads of algae growth. We swam in it first visit and felt awful afterwards - very unclean and funny smell. Walked away yesterday when we went to go again, just as bad looking.

Great pools, at a good temperature; cold enough to cool down without shocking yourself. Plenty of shaded area around for spectators. Pool access exclusively via ladders, no stairs like the Frimley pool.
