I was visiting NZ from Australia and came to the open mat here at CheckMat Christchurch. Can I say these guys and girls are great to roll with and super chill. No egos at all. I would highly recommend visiting this club if you are in South Island, NZ.
This is an amazing place to learn jiu jitsu, led by outstanding coaches.The classes are comprehensive and enjoyable, perfect for mastering and learning techniques . The gym is impeccably clean and offers a lot of support for you to grow. What sets it apart is the supportive team environment, welcoming anyone eager to explore something new. The coaches are not only amazing but also genuine, striving to bring out the best in their students. The sense of community among the members is remarkable, making every training session enjoyable and rewarding. Overall, being part of this gym is an awesome experience that comes highly recommended.
The best gym in town hands down. Very welcoming. Very good for competitors and hobbyists alike. The coaches are very knowledgeable and accommodating. Their coaching is next level. The people are very friendly. They make you feel that you have been training there for a long time because of the welcoming vibe. Everyone supports each other. The gym is like a big family. They also have classes with different times that would fit everyones schedule. They also have high level practitioners from all over the world that visit and train at the gym. They have classes for kids and adults alike. Would recommend 10/10!
Great gym with an awesome atmosphere. Very welcoming with solid training sessions and an emphasis on technique. Also has a very flexible timetable offering early morning and evening sessions 5 days a week, plus a Saturday and women’s class. Greg looks after his students and puts in the time and effort to better their jiu jitsu. Love this place.
Good group of people, lots of experienced and high level people willing to support new people. Good culture. Nice clean space.

After many years of training in combat sports, I found this gym to be one of the most welcoming, humble and supportive environments to learn and train, with excellent facilities. I have also been very impressed at how the coaches work with the kids and how much they encourage and support them in training — definitely the best BJJ gym in Christchurch.
