When I started learning guitar it was intended to be a hobby to amuse myself. However, with expert guidance from AGS, I now regularly jam with new friends and have played live in front of several hundred people. A whole new world has been revealed to me and I couldn’t be happier.
I have been learning to play the guitar at Auckland Guitar School for almost three years, and it has been an incredible experience. Dylan Kay and the team are outstanding teachers, providing a perfect balance of theory and practical skills that have helped me significantly improve my playing. As an older adult student, I have especially appreciated their patience, encouragement, and structured approach, which have made learning both enjoyable and rewarding. The supportive and inspiring environment at the school fosters real progress, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to develop their guitar skills, no matter their age or level.
I had been at Auckland Guitar School for 9 years and I can certainly say that not only have I grown as a guitarist and a musician. The teachers at AGS provide great feedback and help, personalising lessons even whilst being a group lesson. The social aspect of being AGS is definitely a plus. The little and big gigs are great way to showcase your guitar skills to like-minded people. While I unfortunately had to leave AGS due to a changing schedule, I can certainly say that if you want to learn guitar well, come to AGS!
The best thing about the lessons is that its very practical and allowed me to learn some great songs and techniques I would not be able to learn on my own. Group lessons are fun and give you a great opportunity to be around like-minded people. I have been studying for half a year and have to pause for now but I will reenrol as soon as I get a chance, feeling very thankful to the teachers!
Pretty happy progressed from playin' a few chords to confidently improvising over blues and other tunes. Dylan has a systematic approach to guitar teaching, not just playing songs. AGS is best guitar school in NZ I'd reckon, highly recommended for all levels. The only downside is that my music taste has gone from contemporary to 1960s' old stuff, which made my friends telling me stop hanging out with old people.
I tried to learn Guitar in Intermediate School, but always felt like the classes weren't structured enough, I then joined AGS in 2016. At the school, every lesson has a meaning, where you can walk away and feel like you're improving every week. Dylan is a great teacher because he helps you understand music rather than just play it, and this has led to a quick progression in my skill that I didn't think was possible. With this understanding, I can now look at new music on my own and feel like what was once daunting is possible, if I stop to think about what's written on the page in front of me.
I am a "self taught" guitarist and played for 25 years on and off before starting lessons this year with the Auckland Guitar School. I was looking for inspiration to improve, and the lessons have done that, and so much more for me. I've been gently introduced to all sorts of new technical skills, and this has made a massive difference to my playing. I am learning new songs, but learning how to play them correctly, and having fun as we go along. We learn a bit of theory which is cleverly introduced so that it is not boring or overwhelming. I cannot recommend the lessons with Auckland Guitar school highly enough. Craig B
Absolutely fantastic experience for our son Nicholas. He enjoys every bit of it, the classes are 100% student focused. He plays the guitar a lot at home now and feels more confident. End of year concert it is also an amazing addition for the kids to practice their skills in front of a real audience!
