   My comments are specific to KPMG, Tauranga New Zealand. I’m a permanent resident of NZ and a citizen of the USA. KPMG represented themselves as capable of preparing both my USA and NZ returns. The first year I engaged them, they failed to file my USA Income Tax Return on time – in spite of the fact that they had all my documents FAR in advance. As the deadline approached, I repeatedly inquired about the return (which was already extended 6 months) and each time I was told that things were on track. It was a total disaster. In the end, I had a USA accountant prepare my taxes, but I incurred penalties for filing a late return. My USA accountant told me that my return that year was “laughably simple”, and there was no earthly reason KPMG should have had issues filing the return. The following year, I sat down with KPMG and we agreed that my USA returns would be done in the USA, and my NZ return would be handled by KPMG. I had no NZ income, but I was still invoiced a whopping $7,544 NZD for my NZ income tax prep. I was told that my return was complicated because KPMG had to go through my overseas (USA) accounts day-by-day and reconstruct daily balances, etc. I informed them that I could have easily provided CSV files that would have both eliminated any chance for a manual error, as well as saving dozens – if not hundreds – of hours of labor, for which they happily invoiced me. I transferred my business away from KPMG. My new NZ accountant did my return for about one-fourth of what KPMG charged me. Their jaw hit the floor when they saw what KPMG charged me. I cannot recommend KPMG, Tauranga for preparing expat tax returns. My experience with them was nothing short of a disaster. I gave them one star because I couldn't give them zero stars.

   very poor service. I pay for the best, but in this case I didn't get it. Poor responses to emails and phone calls. Many with no response at all. Acknowledge their mistakes verbally but then seek to distance themselves from any wrongdoing on email. Now choosing to withhold my documents from being transferred to a new accountant over a fee dispute. Costing my company more and more with each day that passes.
