Hillcrest Fresh Supermarket is hands down the best place in Hamilton for fresh fruits and vegetables. Their prices are way better than the big chains, and the quality is always top-notch. I love that I can get all my Indian groceries and international items in one go. Their weekly specials-especially on eggs and bread-are the cheapest I've found. Definitely my go-to for my weekly grocery shop!

I visited this shop during their Christmas sale, expecting good deals on essentials. I was very disappointed to find that their so-called "sale" items are actually more expensive than regular prices at other stores. A clear example: eggs. They advertised "2 trays for a special Christmas price," but when I calculated the price per tray, it was higher than the standard price for a single tray at supermarkets nearby.

The place is good, affordable, and in a prime location for university students, which I really liked. However, I did feel that it was a bit dirty, and the fridge was cluttered. What concerned me more was seeing expired items being displayed and sold, both indoors and outdoors. As an Indian myself, I know many of us come here to New Zealand to improve our quality of life. But when I see some of our own people running businesses like this, it makes me uncomfortable. Today, I even saw a few people buying expired sweets for their children. Of course, it is the parents’ responsibility to check what they buy, but shops and stores also have an equal responsibility to maintain quality and safety. It makes me wonder what are the New Zealand trade and quality authorities or local councils doing about this? Selling expired food can cause real harm, especially to kids, and it shouldn’t be overlooked.

This shop is small but has almost everything except meat, and it’s located in an extremely convenient spot, especially for new international students. They offer a wide range of products, including vegetables, fruits, fresh goods, spices, nuts, rice, oil, and various food items from Indian, Chinese, Japanese, and Mexican cuisines. You can find essential seasonings like soy sauce, Kewpie mayonnaise, black vinegar, and different types of sauces (醬), as well as instant noodles. They also stock daily necessities such as garbage bags, dishwashing liquid, and sponges. As you settle in and become more familiar with the area, you may start visiting other shops for higher quality or better deals on specific items. However, when you’re busy with assignments, you’ll likely find yourself repeatedly returning to this shop due to its convenience. There are a few things to watch out for. You’ll notice a lot of fruits and vegetables displayed outside the shop at very competitive prices. In my experience, many of these items tend to be overripe, partly spoiled, or even moldy. It’s up to you to decide whether the bargain is worth it. Another point to consider is the condition of their samosas. They sell these tasty snacks near the checkout counters, but the quality varies day to day. If you want the best samosas, it’s better to buy them when the shop is managed by an experienced older lady, who seems to ensure better quality control.

I can dismiss the lady at the counter giving me the wrong change on two separate occasions, everyone makes mistakes. But having to go home to check if a transaction did go out when she said it hadn't & I told her it definitely did was just an awesome experience.

I have been charged more than ticket price for items several times over the past 3 years. Sometimes produce is visibly going off (moldy) on the shelves. OK to buy packaged goods from the grocery side as long as you are careful you are not overcharged at the till, but I stopped buying fresh produce there some time ago.
