When I started learning guitar it was intended to be a hobby to amuse myself. However, with expert guidance from AGS, I now regularly jam with new friends and have played live in front of several hundred people. A whole new world has been revealed to me and I couldn’t be happier.

I have been learning to play the guitar at Auckland Guitar School for almost three years, and it has been an incredible experience. Dylan Kay and the team are outstanding teachers, providing a perfect balance of theory and practical skills that have helped me significantly improve my playing. As an older adult student, I have especially appreciated their patience, encouragement, and structured approach, which have made learning both enjoyable and rewarding. The supportive and inspiring environment at the school fosters real progress, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to develop their guitar skills, no matter their age or level.

I had been at Auckland Guitar School for 9 years and I can certainly say that not only have I grown as a guitarist and a musician. The teachers at AGS provide great feedback and help, personalising lessons even whilst being a group lesson. The social aspect of being AGS is definitely a plus. The little and big gigs are great way to showcase your guitar skills to like-minded people. While I unfortunately had to leave AGS due to a changing schedule, I can certainly say that if you want to learn guitar well, come to AGS!

I started learning guitar as part of my Duke of Edinburgh Award. Thanks to the fantastic learning environment created by AGS, guitar has been the one constant activity throughout my 3 years of Duke of Edinburgh. I really enjoyed the opportunity to choose what content I learnt, which made the lessons more relevant and helped me achieve my personal goals. The teachers all worked hard to ensure that lessons were well structured, planned and executed, ensuring a good mix of learning new skills and consolidating on what we'd covered previously. Even when Covid hit, AGS wasted no time in implementing alternative teaching arrangements, ensuring that not a single lesson was missed! I can't believe the progress I've made, from picking out single notes and basic chords to now jamming along to Red Hot Chili Peppers!! AGS has given me a gift and skill that I will carry with me throughout my life. Thank you for everything!!

Auckland Guitar School provides me with the structured, challenging learning environment I need to progress my playing. We get through so much work in an hour, the time flies by. Learning in a group provides the added bonus of meeting new guitar friends and being able to jam together every week at the end of the lesson, usually on a challenging piece. Using my time wisely is important to me, the class is broken into parts that cover different aspects of the guitar and gives me lots to work on during the week. There is enough resources available from the school to assist, but if you need more you only need to ask and you will be helped. If you are serious about developing as a guitarist, AGS is the right school to be involved with.

The group classes are a different experience from any other music lesson I’ve tried before but there is a massive benefit from hearing other students playing and playing together and hearing everyone progressing. The teachers are knowledgeable and keep the lessons interesting even managing to present the more gnarly elements of music and guitar theory in manageable well explained bite sized chunks to progress your playing and knowledge. Would highly recommend to anyone interested in picking up a guitar or improving their playing even if you have been playing for a while!!

If you're willing to put in the effort, practice and take on board the advice of the teachers then you'll really get a lot out of it. I started playing around 4 years before coming to NZ and joining up, but feel like my playing has progressed as much (if not more) in 12 months of being at AGS as it did in those first 4 years. They also put on informal jam classes and shows for the students which are a great introduction to playing in front of people and with other guitarists/musicians.

I tried to learn Guitar in Intermediate School, but always felt like the classes weren't structured enough, I then joined AGS in 2016. At the school, every lesson has a meaning, where you can walk away and feel like you're improving every week. Dylan is a great teacher because he helps you understand music rather than just play it, and this has led to a quick progression in my skill that I didn't think was possible. With this understanding, I can now look at new music on my own and feel like what was once daunting is possible, if I stop to think about what's written on the page in front of me.

Joining Auckland Guitar School nine months ago is one of the best things I've done. I had tried to learn guitar previously through books/DVDs, online lessons and a few teachers. Although I had gained some basic guitar skills, I lacked confidence, felt stuck in my learning, and frustrated that I still couldn't really play anything well. My weekly lessons at AGS have transformed my guitar learning. I am learning material that feels right for me, at a manageable pace and level of challenge. I am making progress in lots of areas - soloing, improvising, rhythm and theory. Thanks to AGS, the bits and pieces of musical knowledge I learned in the past are now coming together and making sense. I feel inspired, focused, and highly motivated to practice. The lessons are well structured and thoughtfully delivered by outstanding teachers. Each lesson builds upon the last, cleverly reinforcing knowledge and techniques. In the process, I am learning lots of fantastic songs which is a lot of fun!

I am a "self taught" guitarist and played for 25 years on and off before starting lessons this year with the Auckland Guitar School. I was looking for inspiration to improve, and the lessons have done that, and so much more for me. I've been gently introduced to all sorts of new technical skills, and this has made a massive difference to my playing. I am learning new songs, but learning how to play them correctly, and having fun as we go along. We learn a bit of theory which is cleverly introduced so that it is not boring or overwhelming. I cannot recommend the lessons with Auckland Guitar school highly enough. Craig B
