I was operated on Dr John Ferguson at ascot hospital in 2014. The operation involved insertion of a steel rod to correct and stabilise four compressed thoracic vertebrae I think t 4, t5, t6 & t7. Two of these vertebrae were compressed beyond 25% of their original height. Ie a very severe injury which was sustained after landing directly on my head in a high speed motorcycle accident, caused by third party negligence. I was operated on despite presenting with a high temperature indicating sickness immediately before surgery. I woke up in the back of an ambulance, sirens screaming. It was explained to me that in the operation one of my lungs had been punctured and I was being rushed to a much larger hospital where I was immediately put on an artifical respirator. I quickly developed pneumonia. After about three weeks flat on my back with mechanical ventilation and antibiotics I only just very only managed to survive. Three months later I was discharged but with severe emphysema, which I didn't have before the surgery. On a follow up appointment with Dr Ferguson he said "have you fallen over". I hadn't and told him that. He said "you must have fallen over as you have another fractured vertebrae". I also noticed that his general demeanour had changed from being very friendly to confrontational. I sort a second opinion from Dr Clayton Chan, spinal surgeon and head of orthopaedics at that major hospital I had been in following the failed surgery. He told me that "it was inevitable that the vertebrae at the base of the rod would fracture". He was astounded that the operation I had was attempted at all. Furthermore he said the only solution would have been a rod from my neck down to my pelvis. . I didn't complain against Dr Ferguson. I thought what's the point? In nz you cannot sue for medical negligence. There is no justice in Nz when it comes to negligence. The surgery by Dr Ferguson has destroyed my life. Andrew Hill. BPA. MPINZ Registered Valuer.

I've now had 2 surgeries with John (recovering in the hospital now for the second). Originally I went to him as second option. Immediately I found him approachable and empathetic, which is rare in surgeons :) He explained the options in a clear manner and then when the hospital was delaying the schedule he personally went to bat for me at a really tough time. For me that is above and beyond. Before and after the procedures his communication has been great and I've enjoyed starting a bit banter, making the serious situation a bit more light. I have not hesitated recommending John to others and if you are in need of a spinal surgeon, John should be on the top of your list.

I followed John’s guidance and after he performed his magic, the ALIF got my life back on track. If you set your mind to it, listen to John’s direction and drive your healing, it’s really worth it. Thanks John for giving me the freedom to move again without pain.

I have had 2 separate lumbar fusions performed by John, one in 2018 and another last year, These were at L5/S1 and L4/L5 due to 2 separate incidents. I trust his knowledge and expertise and wouldn't think twice about using his services, I have recovered from both operations and I am back to doing everything i was doing pre operations, I cant thank him and his team enough, highly recommended.

John performed a lumbar fusion on me late last year. I had been in constant pain for 3 years with a lumbar disc pressing on a nerve going down my leg, and life was very challenging, unhappy and exhausting. From the first consultation I found his care exceptional and knew I could trust him 100% to do the right thing. I know my actual surgery was very challenging (due to underlying health issues) and he went above and beyond in performing it with patience and care. I unfortunately suffered several complications after surgery (again not his fault, due to my own health issues) and he managed them again expertly with care and consideration. I have no idea why there is such a nasty review on this website. This does not reflect the man who managed my difficult surgery and complicated after-care with patience, care and skilled measures - and gave me back my life. 6 months later I am pain free and have my life and happiness back, and will ever be grateful to John.
