I had an appalling experience with Advantage Tyres Kingsland that left me feeling dismissed, patronised, and treated with a complete lack of integrity. Three weeks ago, after driving only a couple of minutes from my home to work, I discovered a flat tyre. There was no obvious sign of damage to the tyre, and there was no object that had penetrated the rubber. I changed it myself and put on the full spare. Expecting a simple patch repair or reinflation, I took the tyre to a local tyre shop, where a very fine crack was identified on the side of the inside of the tyre. I was advised it could not be repaired due to its location and would require replacement. This tyre was near-new. I had replaced both rear tyres in July and had barely driven the car since. I generally walk to work (except when Auckland weather doesn't allow) and, over six weeks, used only around $80 worth of fuel. There has been no misuse, no rough driving, no off-roading and no pothole incident. Given this, I returned to Advantage Tyres where the tyre was purchased β to have it assessed under the Consumer Guarantees Act. I explained clearly that I believed the tyre was defective and asked for it to be inspected. The staff member I spoke to (Neal) was immediately dismissive. He did not offer assistance to retrieve the tyre from the boot of my car. After a quick bubble inspection he was confident in being able to assert that the tyre was βdamaged, not defective,β without being able to explain *how* it was damaged, beyond speculation that I must have hit a pothole β something he could not substantiate and would not listen to me refute. When I asked him to explain how the visible bubbles proved misuse rather than a defect, he repeatedly stated, βIβm not giving you a free tyre,β rather than engaging in any meaningful explanation. When I referenced consumer rights, he laughed and told me to complain if I wanted to. I was initially invited into the workshop to view the tyre to inspect the so called damage, however I was then abruptly told by Neal that I was no longer allowed inside while the tyre was removed from the rim β a reversal that felt hostile and non-transparent β only to be told to come inside again two minutes later to look at it again. I was shown rubber debris inside the tyre which βprovedβ it had been driven on under-inflated and I must not check my tyre pressure enough, ignoring the obvious reality that tyres are often driven briefly when there is a flat tyre before the driver becomes aware. Expecting drivers to visually inspect tyres before every two-minute drive is unreasonable, and a tyre should not lose air in the first place if it is not defective or poorly installed. A tyre is meant to last 6 β 10 years, not less than 6 months. I was then offered a so-called βcost-priceβ replacement of $150 with free alignment. This was laughable as this cost-price was more than what I originally paid per tyre β clearly then a blatant lie that it was βcost priceβ. After questioning this, the offer was withdrawn entirely following a phone call with the boss. The price suddenly became $189, with the supposed discount being withdrawn, showing zero value placed on decent customer relations. I declined to give them any more money and requested that the tyre be sent for warranty inspection, as is my right. They seemed reluctant to do so, which raises serious questions about whose interests they are protecting. To find the right replacement I went to two different tyre suppliers who both expressed shock at how I was treated and dismissed for asserting my rights. One stated they would have at least provided a temporary solution while assessing the claim. I ultimately purchased the same tyre elsewhere for $105, fitted β again, completing contradicting Neal's lie that $150 was cost price. Money is tight for many people right now. A tyre should last longer than a few months and customers should not be shamed or stonewalled for advocating for their rights. DO NOT BUY FROM THEM if you want fair treatment, transparency, or respect. Take-Advantage Tyres more like.
