   I took a surf lesson with Piha Surf School at Piha Beach and it was absolutely fantastic. The beach itself is incredibly beautiful. Stunning scenery, a great vibe, and an amazing place to be in and out of the water. The instructor was truly outstanding: professional, patient, and super encouraging, with clear explanations and great attention to detail. I felt safe and well supported the entire time, and I made progress much faster than I expected. A perfect combination of an incredible location and top-quality coaching. I’d 100% do it again and highly recommend Piha Surf School.

   My partner and I loved Phil's teaching style - he gave us some basic instructions on the beach, but most of the time was spent in the waves, learning through experience. Phil gave us simple but accurate feedback after we caught waves, to help us improve quickly without overwhelming with information. Very encouraging, funny and attentive teacher - the best I have ever had! 100% recommend!

   Epic day for a totally reasonable price. It was my first experience surfing and Phil was an absolute legend. Clearly a pillar of the community and a surfing veteran, he was a great teacher and brilliant chat. He had me catch a wave first try and improve solidly over the lesson so I was able to ride a few in to the beach. Can't think of a better setting to surf than Piha either. Five stars

   I’ve been learning with Phil at Piha Surf School for almost a year and he’s by far the best instructor I’ve had. I’ve taken lessons in different places around New Zealand and overseas, and his teaching style really stands out. He’s patient, calm and explains things in a way that makes everything click. It’s never just a quick lesson and goodbye, Phil creates a real sense of community where you feel supported and part of something. He’s gone above and beyond, helping me choose and buy my first board, sorting me out with a wetsuit and giving advice every step of the way. Thanks to him, surfing has become a big part of my life. He’s also been incredible with my six-year-old son, who now can’t wait to get back in the water. Phil is genuine, encouraging and truly passionate about what he does. I couldn’t recommend Piha Surf School more.

   Highly recommend a surf lesson with Phil! He was patient, explained everything clearly and with a good sense of humour. Everyone in our group managed to get up on the board a few times by the end, even tho most of us were total beginners. The price of the lesson is really good as it also includes your wetsuit and board hire. There's really no excuse not to book a lesson with Piha Surf School, if you're thinking about giving surfing a try.

   Phil was amazing ❤️ we loved every minute. We had a group of six with little to no experience and he made it all clear and easy for us to actually surf some waves! At some points the waves did get a little daunting, but knowing that an experienced surfer like Phil was there made it all that better.

   I took one group class with Zen and one with Phil. They were both so great ! First they remind you the good mouvements and safety basis so you fell very comfortable and safe. Then, they were both very good teacher and very patient ! I really enjoyed my time with them and felt that I improved ! Cheers to both of you !

   Phil was absolutely wonderful. We booked in with him as it was my sister's dream to surf while she visited me here in NZ. Not only did Phil give us instructions, but he actually came in the water to make sure we got up on the board - we were properly surfing in no time. Then Phil drove us to where a friend was so we could meet with her briefly. Excellent customer service above & beyond, excellent instructions - oh and he gave us a peach from his very own peach tree and taught us about the town of Piha. Thank you Phil - 10/10 recommend.

   My husband and I booked a beginner’s lesson with Phil and had the BEST time. I was expecting to actually catch a wave once or twice, but Phil had us up on our boards right from the start! If you’re looking for surf lessons in the area, don’t go anywhere else!

   Thanks heaps again for the lesson Phil! Phil was a fantastic instructor. His instructions in regards to technique & safety were very clear. The thing we really loved about Phil is his passion and enthusiasm for Piha, surfing and being a really good coach/instructor. It made us feel good about ourselves and confident in our abilities.
