I don't understand why this hospital has phones...no one answers them. Over the past few years I have had to use this hospital for appointments. Out patients do not ever answer the phone or reply to messages. The last call was to try and sort out a problem caused by them.

Today 18-08-2025 we arrived at Masterton A & E at 11,45am .My wife had had a fall and could not walk after badly injuring her knee. Fortunately there was a wheelchair outside the entrance to the A & E which i used to get her into the reception area but that was the end of the "good" experience. The time is now 11.15 pm ( 11 hours 30minutes later) and she just been seen by a doctor. We have all the respect in the world for all the staff at the A @ E but feel the Wairarapa people need to lobby our local politicians to ensure that the Health Minister/Department are aware of these regular delays which are probably caused by the lack of funding to fully staff this A & E.

My experience at the Masterton Hospital Emergency Ward was nothing short of appalling and frankly, dangerous. I arrived in need of urgent medical attention and was left to wait for over 10 hours without being seen by a doctor. As of writing this review, I am still waiting. A 10+ hour wait in an "Emergency" ward is a complete failure of service. What is the meaning of the word "Emergency" if patients are left to suffer and their conditions potentially worsen for such a ridiculous length of time? Someone could literally die waiting for care here. I understand that emergency wards can be busy, but this is a systemic failure, not just a busy day. The lack of care, communication, and basic human decency shown to patients waiting is inexcusable. If you are unwell and in need of urgent care, be prepared for a wait that will test your limits and potentially put your health at further risk. This is not an emergency service; it's a waiting room that has forgotten its purpose.

Very nice staff, only and real problem is the doors in the isolation room (1-3). They cause a nasty draft which is very bad for lung patients like me.They don't shut properly unless force is applied. 90% of staff can't be bordered to adhere to the clear sign to shut them. PLEASE FIX, this is a HEALTH ISSUE One year later: STILL NOT FIXED

My wife came in from Palmerston North with kidney issues, and within 20 minutes she was looked at and given a room. All the nurses and doctors have been helpful and supportive. I will happily recommend the Wairapapa Hospital!

Mental health care at this hospital is almost nonexistent. Their only psychiatrist left, there are no mental health practitioner's there to help you in a crisis you are told to go and see your gp for a referral back to them even though they have no psychiatrist to help you. You are better off going to the A and E at Hutt hospital if you are in a crisis at least they have psychiatrists' Just use a friends or family's Lower Hutt address so they don't send you back to Masterton hospital if you want to be seen and receive help.

28.4.2023 Firstly this concerns only the clerks that deal with the general public one that I observed tonight the 28.4.2023 : I accompanied a a friend to the emergency room who was in extreme pain and needed to be seen immediately . He was handed a form to fill out even though he could hardly concentrate with a spinal complication which I was assisting him with : he subsequently exited the building because he needed to lay horizontal as laying vertical increased the pain level which was a 10 the maximum pain level . I approach the clerk on tonight and her response was a laugh I said to her that man is in extreme pain and her exact response was a scoff and a laugh to the colleague next to her : this is the state of our health system in Masterton its ridiculous . I randomly was able to talk to a passing nurse and the ball started rolling and my friend who had been operated on recently was finally spoken too and seen by both a triage nurse and a doctor thereafter . There are communication issues that exist here and matters of professionalism that need to be examined also this is not the first incident. Another person had to be bleeding and walking around the E.R before staff reacted to the person whom was in shock which I explained to them 5 times before they reacted and acknowledged she was in shock (ocured five months earlier) In conclusion there are a number of different issues that exist not just with the masterton public health system but the health system in general we need more nurses and there needs to be closer vetting by the human resources department we need the right people in jobs here . I also acknowledge there is a shortage of nurses and its a pressurised environment this is the result of poor money management which points to both lower and upper level management being at fault there needs to be some changes and we need to up our game here big time for the whole countries sake for better health care and well being . Very disappointed .I went to ED and I was been there nearly 11 hours with very severe cut on my thumb and they stitched it without checking properly. Now I cant bend my thumb. I have to open it again and do the repair. but Hutt hospital is taking only life and death situation. For me this is life and death I cant work and ACC 80% is not enough for my family .but hospitals don't care about my situation.

I have mixed reviews. Once through ED out back, the Doctors and nurses are fantastic, 5 stars. But im giving this review based on the last visit. My elderly mother went in with a very painful rash and feeling unwell. She went in for triage and the nurse was horrific. She basically told her she was wasting their time and that she needed to decide if she really wanted to see a doctor and to hurry up and decide. She also told her that if she decided to stay she would be bumped to the back of the line. When mum asked her whether she thought she needed to stay, the nurse refused to answer and said mum needed to make that decision! Mum left in the end, in tears. I took her to an emergency GP visit, and they were appalled, she has really nasty infection and needed treatment asap. It is the second time we have experienced that nurse, and while we understand staffing shortages and covid, we cant help but wonder if she hates her job.

I have a mixed review since it's hard to review a place that has many different staff. I've had bad experiences and good. It all depends on the staff you deal with. One of the woman on reception at the A&E is always very rude and moody. She refused to let my husband be seen for his toothache, yet another time they allowed me to be seen for the exact same problem and gave me an injection to numb the pain, my husband went home in excruciating pain. Another woman on reception was much nicer and more helpful. However when we went in to get our 9 month old checked for a fever, a couple of the nurses were quite rude. My LO ended up falling asleep due to being very sick and feverish, I didn't want to wake her and we requested to keep the light off since it was upsetting her and the nurse got very snappy at us and stormed out the room. It was super unprofessional, and discouraged us that we left. We ended up calling an ambulance early the next morning because our LO got worse and the nurses at that hour (2-5am) were much better to deal with and showed compassion for us and our LO. It is hard having to show up and put your trust in strangers to care for your small child, it's also very unsettling to see your LO in so much pain. Nurses and Dr's who are able to show compassion and understanding toward the parents and their patients is so important and very valued today since it seems many hearts are growing cold. Thank you to those who did help us and show concern and to those that didn't, I hope you can re evaluate yourselves and show more empathy and less judgment.
