I lived here for two years from 2017-19. There was a very elderly Chinese woman who lived across the hall from me. When I first arrived I'd always see her in the hallway or sitting on the benches across Courtenay Place. As time went on she seemed to get slower; I'd be holding the elevator door for longer to wait for her. I don't think she spoke much English, but it seemed like she interacted less and less. Eventually she stopped going down the elevator, just walking along the hallway. I guess there's no point exiting the building if you can't go far - it stinks out front and there's no direct sunlight on that side of the street. Every few Sundays her family would come to visit, adult children who would yell at the grandkids for running up and down the hallway. Over time it seemed like they came less and less. I knew she was getting less mobile so I didn't think much of it when I hadn't seen her for a while. But then one Sunday her family arrived, I heard a scream from her apartment. When I want out a while later they had the door jammed open to ventilate and a really filthy smell was coming out. Needless to say, I never saw her again. This place is the pits. The story epitomises the atomisation that so many people experience living somewhere like this. In the middle of the city, surrounded by activity, there are so many sad and lonely people living here. I think it rubbed off on to me. The sleepless nights due to the dreadful music from the bars below definitely didn't help. Just go live in the Hutt and catch the train.
