   My partner and I have been together since 2019 and in 2020 he made the decision to move to New Zealand. He came to New Zealand on his student visa to play for a rugby club in Wellington. The rugby club assisted him in applying for a work visa, however, his visa application was not granted. This really left us in a difficult position as his student visa expired and the application for a work visa was not approved. We then went to our long-time family lawyer who has helped our family in the past. However, she was unable to provide the correct advice which resulted in his Section 61 application being declined. This was a very difficult time for us as young adults and we did not know how to go about these situations. I was very worried for my partner because when we got the news that his application had been declined, I could see that he felt disheartened. I felt helpless as we did not have the funds at the time to seek advice from an experienced lawyer. We are so grateful to my mother for helping us on this journey because without her we wouldn’t have been able to find someone like Simon.
